Keeping children safe takes all of us.
Earlier this month, every Carterville CUSD #5 employee participated in training focused on sexual abuse awareness, prevention, and recognizing the warning signs of grooming. We followed that training with a presentation open to parents and our broader community.
Since then, several families have asked about the training and the information that was shared. We thought others in our community might benefit from hearing more about it as well.
One of the most important messages was this: children should have positive relationships with caring adults — while also knowing how to recognize inappropriate boundaries, secrecy, isolation, and other warning signs, and knowing that it's always okay to speak up.
Our work will continue as we strengthen age-appropriate education for students and provide families with information and resources to help keep children safe.

Just a friendly reminder to take a quick look at your student's lunch account balance.
If your student has been eating breakfast and/or lunch at school, now is great time to check their balance and add funds if needed. Keeping accounts up to date helps our food service program continue to run smoothly.
You can check you student's balance or make a payment through your Skyward Family Access account.

Carterville CUSD No. 5 Reminder: Wednesday, September 30, is a 1-hr early dismissal for all buildings. Buses and Latchkey will run immediately following dismissal.

Next Thursday, October 8th, will be Fall Picture Day for all CJHS students and staff.
Fall Sports Picture Day will also be held that day for Baseball, Softball and Cross Country athletes.

This week at CJHS, students were encouraged to try their chances in winning a free a-la-carte food item at lunch, snack from the school counselor, or lunch (of your choice) for good grades. Even if they didn't win, they received a positive affirmation or word of encouragement. Students were called a few at a time during lunch to pick a card from our counselor, Mrs. Antrim.

This past Friday, our CHS and CJHS students showed what it truly means to be part of a community.
At Friday night’s football game, our football team didn’t hesitate when asked to sign a jersey and hold up signs in support of a fellow 8th grade student who is battling cancer. Their willingness to stand beside their classmate was a powerful reminder that some of life’s most important victories happen off the field.
Today at CJHS, our students continued to show their support by wearing yellow and gold in honor of their friend and classmate. Seeing our students rally around one another was incredibly meaningful.
We are so proud to be part of a school community that cares deeply for one another and teaches our children that no one should ever have to fight their battles alone.

Popsicle Stick Bridges Put to the Test!
Mr. Clark's students recently transformed simple popsicle sticks into impressive truss bridges—and then put them to the ultimate challenge! Working in teams, they designed and built structures while exploring key engineering concepts like tension, compression, and the strength of triangular trusses.
The real excitement came during load testing. Using a carefully set-up system with a wooden support, hook, and string, students applied increasing weight to their bridges and carefully converted measurements from grams to pounds. The results were outstanding: several bridges held over 20 pounds before finally giving way!
Students left with a deeper understanding of structural engineering—and big smiles from watching their creations perform under real stress. We’re so proud of their creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork!
