Inclement Weather Protocol

Dear Carterville CUSD #5 Community:

As winter approaches, we would like to remind families of Carterville CUSD #5’s inclement weather protocol.  In the event of inclement weather, the Superintendent will implement one of the following three scenarios:

E-LEARNING DAY

All school buildings will be closed, however students and staff will complete the school day from home.  This will eliminate the need to make up days at the end of the school year.  Teachers will use their usual electronic communication methods (i.e., Class Dojo, Google Suite) to provide instruction and support students.  Things to know:

  • ISBE guidelines state this day should be the equivalent of 5 instructional / student work hours . Elementary teachers will allocate time accordingly across the subjects while allowing time for physical education and music. Secondary teachers will attempt to limit lessons to 30 minutes to allow time for all subjects, physical education, electives, and homework.

  • All assignments will be posted by 9:00 AM.

  • Teachers will be available from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM to answer questions and provide support via email, Google Meet, etc.

    • 8:00 - 9:00 AM and 2:00 - 3:00 PM will be used by teachers to prepare and conclude the E-Learning Day.

  • Students are encouraged to complete lesson and activities on the E-Learning Day or in a timely manner. However, students will not be penalized for failure to complete work due to connectivity or other issues related to this day

    .

  • Students should ensure they ask questions via email or attend offered Google Meet sessions prior to 2:00 PM.

SCHOOL CANCELED

All school buildings will be closed and students will make up the inclement weather day at the end of the school year.

EARLY DISMISSAL

Although rare, there are occasions where it may be necessary to dismiss school early. This is typically due to unforeseen weather conditions.  High school, jr. high and CIS students will dismiss early at the announced time.  Should after school arrangements need adjusted, parents should communicate those needs with the office or homeroom teacher. Tri-C homeroom teachers will seek communication from students’ parents to confirm / revise the dismissal arrangements for each child.  Email and Dojo messages are often the best method for communicating during an event such as this.

INCLEMENT WEATHER COMMUNICATION

School closings due to inclement weather or other unusual circumstances will be announced on the district website, Facebook, and Twitter.  Families will also receive a text, phone call or email through our automated emergency notification system.
